A04. If heaven is good — why is it not the final destination?

A04. If heaven is good — why is it not the final destination?

The short answer: Because good is not the same as free. Heaven is pleasant but bounded. The soul that knows itself — even in heaven — knows it has not yet reached what it is actually looking for.

The framework: This is the question the souls in heaven were already asking. Even there, even in the pleasant realms where the good karma was playing out, there was a knowing that the enjoyment was temporary. That something more fundamental remained unresolved. That the cycle would turn again.

The distinction the tradition draws is between pleasure and liberation. Heaven provides the first. It does not provide the second. Pleasure — however refined, however sustained — is still a conditioned experience. It depends on the conditions of the realm. It has a duration corresponding to the karma that produced it. When the karma is exhausted, the pleasure ends. The soul that has become attached to the pleasure of heaven experiences that ending as loss — which is itself a new impression, a new entry in the account.

Liberation is not a better version of pleasure. It is the dissolution of the mechanism that requires any version of the cycle at all. The Surat that has merged completely with the Sound Current is no longer a separate entity capable of accumulating karma. The account exists. But the account holder is gone. A bank account with no account holder cannot be accessed. The balance is there — but there is no one to be held to it, no one for it to follow into the next round of the cycle.

Heaven does not produce this dissolution. Heaven is a realm within the cycle — a pleasant one, but still within it. The dissolution requires something that heaven cannot offer: the human form with its capacity for conscious practice and the specific technology for merging the Surat with the Shabd.

The turn: Heaven is a destination for the soul that has accumulated sufficient good karma. It is not a destination for the soul that wants to end the cycle. For that soul, the most important thing is not to accumulate good karma for heaven — but to use the human birth to find the exit.
