H08. What does the tradition mean when it says Kal is the Lord of the lower realms?
The short answer: That Kal’s jurisdiction extends through all the lower planes — the physical realm and the planes of heaven and hell immediately above it. Every experience available in the lower planes — pleasant or painful, clear or confused — is within Kal’s domain. Liberation requires exiting the lower planes entirely. The exit is through the merger with the Sound Current, which takes the Surat above Kal’s jurisdictional ceiling.
The framework: The cosmological architecture the tradition describes assigns specific governance to specific planes. The lower realms — from the physical world through the planes of karmic discharge above it — are Kal’s domain. The experiences available in these realms are varied: the pleasure of the physical world, the intensified pleasure of heaven, the painful discharge of hell, the relatively clear experience of developed Sattva within the physical realm. All of these are within Kal’s domain. All of them are sustained by and serve the continuation of the cycle.
The souls in heaven are in Kal’s domain. The souls discharging negative karma in the painful realms are in Kal’s domain. The advanced yogi who has achieved sustained Sattva-dominance through decades of practice is in Kal’s domain until the Surat merges with the Sound Current. The physical world in all its textures — the marketplace, the battlefield, the family, the meditation hall — is in Kal’s domain.
Kal as Lord of these realms means precisely what it implies: the rules that govern experience in the lower planes are Kal’s rules. Karma accumulates and discharges under Kal’s mechanism. The Gunas move through the instrument under Kal’s management. The cycle of birth, death, and return is Kal’s cycle. The soul within these realms is subject to these mechanics regardless of how advanced its practice has become, until the actual exit — the Surat’s merger with the Sound Current above the jurisdictional ceiling — has occurred.
This is why the tradition is specific about the Sound Current as the destination rather than any state within the lower realms. A state of profound Sattva within the lower realms is still within Kal’s domain. The Contact with the Sound Current at the appropriate level of the cosmological architecture is what begins the actual exit. The deeper the merger, the higher the level of the architecture the Surat accesses. The complete merger — the full dissolution of the Surat into the Sound Current — takes the soul above Kal’s ceiling entirely.
The turn: Understanding Kal as Lord of the lower realms clarifies what genuine liberation actually means. Not a better state within the lower realms. Not more Sattva. Not a pleasant experience of heaven. The actual exit from the domain — which only the Sound Current merger produces.
