Q59. Why do I keep repeating my parents’ patterns?

The short answer: Because you were built by those patterns before you had any say in the matter. The pattern is not a choice you are making. It is the instrument running the code it was installed with. You are not your parents. You are running their software.

The framework: Mirror neurons, attachment theory, social learning — neuroscience has multiple frameworks for why children replicate parental patterns. The tradition has one: impressions. The impressions deposited by observing and experiencing the parents’ patterns are among the earliest and deepest the nervous system receives. They become the template for what relationships look like, what emotional responses feel like, what normal means.

The person who swore they would never be like their parent and then hears their parent’s words coming out of their mouth is not a hypocrite. They are the instrument running the deepest available template when the situation is sufficiently stressful. Under pressure, the instrument defaults to the most deeply encoded pattern. The most deeply encoded pattern is almost always parental.

Sanchit karma across lifetimes may also be relevant here — the patterns may not have originated with this lifetime’s parents but been activated by them, the soul arriving with a predisposition toward certain relational dynamics that the family then confirmed and deepened.

The resolution is not awareness alone. Understanding the pattern intellectually does not dissolve the impression. The person can see clearly that they are repeating a parental pattern and still find themselves unable to stop in the moment of activation — because the impression is in the nervous system, not in the understanding. Consciousness is the solvent. As the impression thins through practice, the pattern loses its automatic activation. New responses become possible not through effort but through the dissolution of what was generating the old ones.
