Q55. Why do my parents still affect me even as an adult?

The short answer: Because the impressions they deposited were laid down when the nervous system was in its most receptive state — childhood — and impressions deposited that early become the operating system, not the content running on it.

The framework: The nervous system develops its fundamental calibration in the first years of life. The relational patterns, the threat detection settings, the threshold for safety and danger, the baseline level of activation — all of these are set by the primary relational environment. The parents are not just people the child interacted with. They were the environment. And the environment shaped the instrument at the foundational level.

When an adult responds to a parent’s disapproval with the same nervous system activation as a child did, this is not immaturity. It is the instrument running the code that was installed when the parent’s approval or disapproval had survival-level stakes. The body does not automatically update to reflect that those stakes have changed. It runs what was installed.

Prarabdha explains why those specific parents: the curriculum the Surat needed required that particular nervous system calibration. Not as punishment. As the specific preparation for this life’s arc. The parents were the curriculum delivery mechanism. Their influence does not stop at adulthood because the impressions they delivered are still active in the instrument.

The practice works at the level of those impressions — below the cognitive, below the narrative of what the parents did or didn’t do. Consciousness as the solvent reaches the foundational calibration that cognitive therapy can describe but cannot dissolve. As the impressions thin, the parents’ influence on the nervous system changes — not because the relationship changes, but because the instrument changes.

The turn: Your parents affect you because they installed the operating system. The practice works at the operating system level. That is where their influence actually lives — and where it can actually change.
