A12. What is actually happening when karma is extinguished in heaven or hell?
The short answer: The accumulated impressions corresponding to a specific category of karma are playing out in the environment calibrated to receive them — and in playing out, they discharge. The impression dissolves because the experience it encoded has been fully lived through. The account clears that entry.
The framework: Karma as physics means that every impression must find its corresponding experience. An impression deposited through a specific type of engagement — through joy, through harm, through love, through cruelty — encodes a specific experiential charge. That charge seeks its corresponding experience in order to discharge. When the experience arrives and is fully lived through, the charge releases.
In the physical realm, this process is ongoing but partial — the human life provides some of the experiences corresponding to the accumulated Sanchit, but not all. The karma that does not discharge during the physical lifetime waits. After the physical death, the Surat moves through the realms that correspond to the remaining charges. The pleasant realms provide the experiences corresponding to positive karma. The painful realms provide the experiences corresponding to negative karma. In both cases, the mechanism is the same: the impression plays out, the charge releases, the entry in the account is cleared.
What makes the human plane unique is not that karma discharges there — it discharges in the post-death realms too. What makes the human plane unique is the capacity for conscious participation in the process. In the post-death realms, the karma discharges automatically — the soul experiences what it must experience and the entry clears. The soul is a passive participant.
In the human form, the soul can understand the mechanism, engage the practice, and accelerate the dissolution of accumulated Sanchit through contact with consciousness and the Sound Current — going far beyond what the automatic post-death processing can clear. This is why the human birth is rare and precious. Not because it is pleasant. Because it offers a form of conscious participation in the clearing process that no other realm provides.
The turn: The difference between karma clearing in heaven or hell and karma clearing through the human practice is the difference between passive processing and conscious dissolution. The first clears individual entries. The second can dissolve the mechanism entirely.
