Why does change feel so hard even when I want it? Papneja Method Dr Papneja

Q34. Why does change feel so hard even when I want it?

The short answer: Because wanting is a Kriyaman intention running against a Prarabdha impression. The impression is older, deeper, and more powerful than the wanting. Wanting alone has never been sufficient to dissolve an impression. If it were, everyone who wanted to change would have changed by now.

The framework: This is one of the most honest things the framework offers and one of the most difficult for the modern Western mind to receive — because the Western narrative is entirely built on the premise that wanting is enough. That with sufficient desire and sufficient effort, any change is possible.

Karma as physics says otherwise. The impression that is generating the pattern you want to change was not created in this lifetime in most cases — or if it was, it was deposited with more force than a few weeks of wanting can dissolve. Prarabdha is the portion already set in motion. It unfolds as it must. Kriyaman is the karma being generated right now. The wanting, the resolution, the effort to change — these are all Kriyaman. They are real and they matter. But they cannot overwrite Prarabdha through force.

What they can do is create the conditions for the practice that works at the level of the impression itself. Consciousness is the solvent. This is the only mechanism that reaches the level where the pattern actually lives. Not therapy, not habit formation, not positive reinforcement — though these all have their role in the Kriyaman layer. The dissolution of the underlying impression requires contact with the source.

The Wisdom article on why most spiritual seeking keeps people stuck addresses this from a different angle: effort at the wrong level produces no result and eventually produces the conclusion that nothing works. The issue is not the effort. It is the level.

The turn: Change is hard because you are trying to rewrite the impression through the mind that the impression produced. The practice reaches underneath the mind to where the impression actually lives. That is where change becomes possible.
