Q01. Why does fixing the body not fix how I feel inside?
The short answer: Because how you feel inside is produced by the instrument’s state — which is not identical to the body’s state. The body is the gross layer. How you feel is produced at the nervous system and subtle body layers, which the physical body’s optimization affects but does not fully determine. You can have an excellent physical specimen running a chronically dysregulated nervous system.
The framework: The health optimization industry has produced a generation of people who eat optimally, sleep with precision, exercise intelligently, track every biomarker — and still feel a persistent quality of inner flatness, anxiety, or emptiness that the optimization does not touch. This is not a failure of the optimization. It is the accurate result of optimizing the gross layer while leaving the subtler layers unaddressed.
The five Kosha model from the Vedantic tradition is precise here. The Annamaya Kosha — the physical body — is the outermost sheath. The Pranamaya Kosha — the vital body — is the next layer in. The Manomaya Kosha — the mental body — is the layer after that. Each is subtler than the previous. Optimization of the Annamaya Kosha produces results at the Annamaya layer. It produces some improvement at the Pranamaya layer through the energetic effects of physical health. It has limited direct effect on the Manomaya and deeper layers.
How you feel inside is produced primarily at the Pranamaya and Manomaya layers — the quality of the Prana, the state of the Chitta Bhumis, the accumulated Sanchit running in the subtle body. Physical optimization improves the gross instrument that these subtler layers operate through. It does not directly address the layers that produce the quality of inner experience.
W02 — The Nervous System is the Temple — is the bridge between the physical and the subtle. The nervous system is the gross body’s closest approximation to the Pranamaya Kosha — the physiological expression of the vital energy layer. Physical health optimization that specifically improves nervous system regulation — reducing the inputs that agitate the sympathetic baseline, improving sleep quality, addressing the chronic Rajas through diet and lifestyle — does reach toward the inner experience. But the inner experience is also produced by the Sanchit, by the Chitta Bhumis, by what is accumulated in the subtle body. Only the practice reaches that layer.
The turn: Fix the body. It is the instrument and it matters. Understand that the instrument has layers. The physical optimization addresses the outermost. The practice addresses the deeper ones. Both are necessary. Neither alone is sufficient.
