F02. Why is karma not punishment or reward?
The short answer: Because punishment and reward require a judge. Karma has no judge. It is the automatic physics of impression and consequence operating at a scale too vast for any individual consciousness to oversee. The universe does not evaluate. It executes.
The framework: The moral accounting version of karma imports the structure of human justice systems into the cosmological framework. A judge who evaluates actions and assigns corresponding sentences. A ledger in which good deeds accumulate credit and bad deeds accumulate debt. A day of reckoning at which the balance is assessed and the appropriate consequence is delivered.
This structure feels intuitive because it mirrors the human justice systems that maintain social order. But it is not the mechanics. The mechanics are more impersonal and more precise than any justice system — and more importantly, they operate without requiring a judge.
Every action leaves an impression on the subtle body. Every impression seeks its corresponding experience. The mechanism is automatic. It does not require divine oversight, karmic tribunals, or the evaluation of intent. The impression was deposited with a specific vibrational frequency. That frequency will seek its corresponding experience in the corresponding environment. When the environment is available — when the circumstances, the timing, the other people’s karma all align — the experience arrives. Not because it was assigned. Because the mechanics of impression and consequence are executing.
This is why genuinely innocent people suffer. Not because a judge made an error. Because the Prarabdha — the destiny karma already in motion — includes experiences that correspond to impressions deposited across a much longer arc than the current lifetime. The child born into difficult circumstances is not being punished for this lifetime’s actions. The Sanchit accumulated across prior lifetimes is finding its corresponding environment.
This is also why karma is not ultimately satisfying as a consolation. It does not say things are fair. It says things are precise. The precision is not fairness in the human sense. It is the exact execution of a physics that operates across timescales and configurations that no individual can fully see.
The turn: Karma as physics is simultaneously more rigorous and more compassionate than karma as punishment. More rigorous because there is no escape through good behavior or ritual or pleading — the mechanics execute. More compassionate because it removes the judgment. You are not bad. The impression is simply in the Sanchit and it is running.
