R12. Why do people who pray report genuine changes in their inner states regardless of belief?
The short answer: Because prayer — when practiced with genuine attention and genuine intention — is a form of the inward direction of the Surat. It does not require the specific Surat Shabd Yoga technology to produce some of its effects. Any sustained, genuine attention directed toward what is larger than the ego activates the nervous system’s parasympathetic response and reduces the DMN’s narrative activity. The mechanism is physiological even when the explanation is theological.
The framework: The research on prayer and health outcomes is extensive and somewhat conflicting — different study designs produce different conclusions about whether prayer produces health benefits. The more consistent finding is in the subjective domain: people who pray regularly report genuine changes in their inner states — reduced anxiety, increased sense of connection, improved emotional regulation, a quality of being-held that secular interventions often fail to produce.
The mechanism from the tradition’s perspective: any practice that involves genuine sustained attention directed toward something prior to the ego produces some degree of the effects the practice is designed to produce. Prayer — when practiced with genuine intention, genuine attention, and some degree of surrender of the ego’s ordinary agenda — is Dharana pointed at the divine. The specific object may be theologically framed in ways that the Surat Shabd Yoga tradition would not use. The mechanism is partially the same.
The genuine prayer state — not the rote recitation but the genuine quality of reaching toward something larger, of speaking from the depth of the concern, of asking from a place of genuine need — reduces the DMN’s narrative self-construction and activates the vagal parasympathetic response. The felt sense of being heard, of contact with something beyond the ordinary ego, of the concern being received — this is the Surat momentarily turned in the inward direction and receiving what is always present at that direction.
This is also why prayer is not equivalent to the practice. The Dharana technology of prayer points toward the divine without necessarily preparing the Surat for the specific Contact with the Sound Current. It produces genuine benefits. It is not the complete sequence.
The turn: Prayer produces genuine effects through the partial activation of the same mechanisms the practice activates fully. The people who pray are not wrong about what they experience. They are at the kindergarten-to-university level of the technology. The practice is the complete sequence.
