E07. Why is religion kindergarten — and what are the higher grades?

The short answer: Religion is kindergarten because it provides the foundational orientation — the sense that something real exists to be found — without providing the direct path to finding it. It points. It does not arrive. The higher grades progressively close the gap between pointing and arriving until, at the highest level, the gap closes entirely.

The framework: The kindergarten framing is not a dismissal. A child who does not go to kindergarten is at a disadvantage. The foundations matter. What religion provides — the stories that make the seeking feel legitimate, the community that holds the aspiration, the ritual that trains the attention even if only partially, the moral framework that reduces the Kriyaman karma being generated — these are genuine and valuable. The person who has had good religious education is better prepared for the path than the person who has had none, all else being equal.

But kindergarten has a ceiling. The child who stays in kindergarten as an adult is not failing to progress because kindergarten is bad — they are failing to progress because kindergarten was never designed to take them to where they need to go. Religion was designed to orient mass populations toward the seeking and to provide the basic infrastructure for a spiritual life. It was not designed to produce the direct contact. The traditions that preserved the direct path — the Surat Shabd Yoga lineage, the Sufi tradition, the Vedantic framework — always sat alongside or within the religious structure, pointing past it for those who were ready.

The higher grades close the gap between the pointing and the arriving in stages. Religious studies and philosophy — high school — produce a more sophisticated understanding of what is being pointed at. Personal practice — university — produces actual movement toward the destination. Direct contact — the doctoral level — is the arrival itself.

The Satsang recording and the scripture are kindergarten and high school. Sitting down and doing the practice is university. Making genuine contact with the Sound Current is the degree. Listening to the teaching all day as a substitute for doing the practice is staying in high school indefinitely while calling it preparation.

The turn: Every stage is necessary. None is the destination except the last. The only error is stopping and calling the stopping progress.
