Karma and Debts: Becoming One with the Universe
We all live in a world where money is often seen as the ultimate currency. But there’s a truth far greater than wealth, something many of us don’t see: there are multiple currencies in this world, and some are far more valuable than money.
Imagine someone who is successful by worldly standards—someone who has built a life with all the comforts money can buy. They work hard, are clever, and believe they’ve earned every bit of their success. From the outside, they seem untouchable, living in a palace or perhaps a modest home, but always secure, never needing to worry about survival.
But something is missing.
The Currency of Love, Time, and Energy
This person, like every human being, longs for connection, for companionship, for someone to hear their heart’s whispers. Yet the people around them are struggling. They need help—not just kind words, but real help, financial help—something this person could offer. But they don’t want relationships tangled in money. They’ve placed rules on their generosity, perhaps believing that everyone around them should earn their own way, just as they did.
But here’s the reality: no one chooses to struggle. No one wakes up wanting to fail. Life happens, circumstances happen. And despite this person’s refusal to help in the way that would truly make a difference, they still expect to be loved, respected, and understood. When they reach out to family or friends to lighten their heart, to unload their emotional burdens, they are taking far more than they realize.
They are drawing from the emotional reserves of those who are struggling—taking their time, their mental peace, their energy, and love. The person they lean on is already weighed down by life, but in that moment, their energy is drained further to support someone who could help ease their own burdens, but chooses not to.
What happens next? The person who has been leaned on may feel robbed—not of money, but of something much more valuable. Their emotional health, their time, their love. And if that person chooses to disconnect, to walk away and protect what little they have left, who can blame them?
Now the successful person is left alone, at the top of their mountain. They may have wealth, but they are now truly alone. They wanted to separate their relationships from money, but in doing so, they failed to see that they were taking other forms of wealth—time, energy, love—and not giving anything in return.
Karma is More Than Debt—It’s the Invisible Exchange
In our culture, people track debts in dollars, wanting to settle their accounts and die without financial burdens. But karma is far more complex. There are other forms of debt that bind us—the unspoken debts of time, love, and energy. Every time we take without giving back, every time we expect someone to carry our emotional weight without lightening their load, we accumulate karmic debt.
And the most difficult part? We can only truly help when we feel a sense of belonging. If the people around us don’t feel like they belong to us, how can we expect to help them fully? Without belonging, we are nothing more than isolated beings, taking and taking until the people around us have nothing left to give.
But there is a deeper truth to this. The real currency that sustains us all is love and belongingness. And that love—unconditional, infinite—is only possible when we realize something profound: everyone is you, and you are everyone.
The Ultimate Truth: You Are the Universe
We are not separate. The idea of individuality is an illusion. When you connect deeply with your own consciousness, you begin to see that the entire universe is just you—in a different form, a different shade. Every person, every atom, is a reflection of you. There is no “other.” There is only you, hidden behind layers of body, mind, intellect, and ego. This realization shifts everything.
When you truly understand this, the barriers between you and others dissolve. The loneliness fades. The need to take from others without giving back disappears. Instead, you feel a profound sense of belonging with the entire universe. Everything belongs to you, because you belong to everything.
Imagine living with that kind of love in your heart—a love so deep, so connected, that you cannot help but give, because to give to another is to give to yourself.
This is not a distant ideal. It is a reality that can be experienced by practicing the ancient wisdom of Surat-Shabda yoga. By building awareness of your consciousness and resonating with the divine, you develop a deep love and compassion that naturally leads to the understanding that everyone belongs to you.
Heaven’s Doors vs. The True Home
In this world, we need currency—money—to survive. It’s what we use to buy food, shelter, and the basic necessities of life. But just as this world runs on currency, so does the spiritual world. Yet, the currency that opens the Lord’s doors isn’t your good deeds or acts of kindness—those may open the gates of heaven, but not the doors to your true home.
Your true home, the realm of the Lord, is opened not by deeds, but by love. And not just love for creation or people around you, but love for the creator, love for your own consciousness.
This love isn’t something you can simply manufacture. It’s cultivated by spending time with the creator, by listening to the Shabda and connecting deeply with your Surat. The more you spend time with the divine, the more you develop this love. And that love is the currency that opens the doors to your real home.
It’s not the time spent that counts—it’s the quality of the connection. But as with any relationship, the more time you invest, the deeper your love grows. As you spend more time with your Atma and with the Lord through the Shabda, that love begins to blossom. It becomes the key to the ultimate door, the door to your true spiritual home.
Transforming Through Spiritual Practice
The path to this realization is straightforward. Meditation with Surat and Shabda will gradually transform you into your true self—a person full of love, compassion, joy, bliss, mercy, forgiveness, and kindness. These are the qualities we expect from the truly great, but they are not beyond reach. By connecting to the source of the universe, you become more aligned with the divine, and over time, you embody these virtues.
You will become that which you are most attached to. If you are attached to the divine, you will naturally become more like the divine. This profound transformation is the key to clearing karmic debt and living in harmony with the universe.
Conclusion
Karma is not just a simple tally of financial exchanges—it encompasses all forms of currency, including time, energy, and emotional support. Understanding this broader concept of currency helps us realize that the karmic debts we accumulate in life can hold us back, even if we are financially free. By cultivating a sense of belonging and connection with the universe, we can live more compassionately and with greater awareness, ultimately transcending the karmic cycle and becoming one with the divine.
But the greatest door of all—the door to your true home—is opened only through love. Love for the creator, love for your own consciousness, and that love, nurtured through time and connection with the divine, is the real currency that will guide you home.
